SAT vs ACT: Which Test Should You Take?
Both the SAT and the ACT are college admissions tests, and many colleges accept either one. The better choice is usually the test that fits how you read, calculate and manage time.
What each test covers
The SAT focuses on Reading and Writing and on Math. The ACT includes English, Mathematics, Reading and a Science section that asks you to interpret data and experiments.
How to compare them in practice
- Take a practice set of each test under the same conditions and compare the results.
- Note which one felt more natural: the wording of the questions, the pace, and the type of math.
- If you enjoy reading charts and data quickly, the ACT Science section may suit you.
- If you prefer to work through fewer, more detailed reading and writing questions, you may prefer the SAT.
Check what your colleges want
Before you decide, look at the admissions pages of the colleges you are interested in. They list which tests they accept and how they use the scores.
Make the decision
After trying both, pick the one where your practice results and your comfort are higher, and spend your remaining preparation time on that test.
